Movement is NEAT

Movement throughout the day is key to establishing long-lasting healthy habits and maintaining proper health. Simple, unintentional movements — such as walking to your car or cleaning the house — are examples of NEAT exercise, or non-exercise activity thermogenesis.

NEAT exercise refers to any movement you do that is not part of planned workout routine. NEAT not only benefits your physical health in the long term, but it has also been shown to improve emotional and mental health.

When thinking of NEAT, consider quick and easy bursts of energy and movement. These small movements add up to big results overtime.

Here are some easy ways to incorporate NEAT into your day:

  • Take the long route: Next time you go to the store, park a little further away than usual
  • Choose the stairs: Opt for stairs instead of the elevator to increase your NEAT
  • Stand often: If possible, alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day; A good rule of thumb is to stand for two minutes every 30 minutes sitting
  • Commute actively: If you can, walk or cycle to work or when running errands
  • Socialize actively: When planning outings with friends or family, suggest going on a walk or hike

NEAT exercise is a simple yet powerful tool to enhance your overall wellbeing. By finding ways to stay active throughout your day, you can achieve a more balanced lifestyle. Best of all, NEAT requires no extra time or expense — just a mindset shift to embrace movement in everyday life.
