Warm Up for a Better Workout

warm up

Have you ever tried to drive your car when it’s freezing outside? It always takes a few minutes to warm up properly. The same is true of your body. No matter what type of physical activity you’re doing, you need to warm up first to perform at your best.

What happens in a warm up?

A warm up starts to wake up the body’s systems in preparation for a workout. Your mind gets in the zone, and your heart rate slowly increases to circulate blood to the muscles. Your muscles warm up to prevent injury, and your ligaments and tendons become more flexible, reducing the chance of injury. Your whole body is preparing to help you perform during the workout.

How long should a warm up last?

Warm-up activities can last anywhere from 5-15 minutes. The key is to make sure you use your warm-up time effectively.

What should I include in my warm up?

A warm up should start with several minutes of cardio to increase body temperature and promote blood flow to the muscles. After cardio, include several more minutes of dynamic exercises to get your muscles primed for movement.
